Lanahrone History:
Built in Dundee and delivered in May 1928, the Lanahrone (1,221 gross) was an oil-fired steamer and intended for cattle and general goods from Limerick to Liverpool.The Lanahrone served in the Irish Mercantile Marine during World War II.
It together with another Limerick Steamboat company ship, the `Clonlara` were part of the "nightmare convoy OG 71, which left Liverpool on 13 August 1941. On 19 August 1941, the U-boat attacks began. By the time the convoy reached Lisbon, eight merchant ships, including the Clonlara and two naval escorts and over 400 lives were lost.
Lanahrone later joined convoy HG 73. Nine of the 25 ships in that convoy were lost.
After the War, she was a familiar sight on the Shannon Estuary with her red-white banded funnel until she ended her days in a Dutch breakers yard in 1959.
